Set in 1980s Kalyan, it shows the story of a cruel and clever bootlegger (played by Shah Rukh Khan) whose business is seriously challenged and eventually thwarted by a tough cop Ghulam Patel (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui). The film criticizes the prohibition of alcohol, prostitution and illegal drugs in Gujarat. The film is loosely based on the life of Ahmedabad-based Don Abdul Latif.
